(First Nations people are advised this review mentions the name of people who have died) I first listened to this album deeply in 2018 when I was a sleep-deprived new mum. I could never remember nursery rhymes properly, but I could play this from my phone. I can’t tell you how often I played it. We live in Australia I thought introducing my baby to music sung in language, in this case Yolŋu language, would help my child realise he was a child of Australia through the music of our First Nations folks. We don’t live on Yolŋu country and I am not Indigenous. But this album sounds like nothing I had ever heard, yet it also sounds like Australia to me. I was so delighted the ARIA hall of fame inducted the late Gurrumul into their hall of fame this year. He was such an important Indigenous artist. My kids and I have since started listening to Mitch Tambo sing pop songs in Gamilaraay language.
