The construction of this album blew me away when it came out. The through line with the voice overs in between tracks connecting them to this cinematic arc was so impressive as a means to convey the songs. And then the tracks individually go on to speak themselves, the beats having a classic yet futuristic feel in keeping with the albums overall themes. Logic set himself apart with this one pushing for a higher concept.
As a song writer, Max Benis broke into the emo scene and set Say Anything apart by diving into the his own mental health with witty and self deprecating lyrics that contrasted starkly to the more earnest lyrics of their contemporaries. Cleverly dismantling therapy culture in a way that acknowledges both its need and at times its absurdity.
This album defined the emergence of the scremo movement in the early aughts. The combination and George’s gravely screams and Dallas soaring vocals made for a perfect pairing overtop of the Canadian basement riffs and driving percussion.
