Cracking debut from a band that don’t quite sound like anyone else. A sound that is pure with seemingly a ton of different instruments but also scuzzy (good scuzzy) and slightly off kilter.

This one is usually passed over for their critically acclaimed releases. While it might not be perfect, it was the album that opened the minds of musicians in the 90s to crossover and work outside their norms or media-induced stereotypes. Give each song a twice-over in order, and you'll understand why this decade was pivotal to expanding the diversity of the average listener's musical tastes.

My mom’s record to clean the house to as a kid. The first 3 songs, Spirits in the Material World, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, and Invisible Sun is just a brilliant run of songs that most bands would kill to have in a life time. Another brilliant album produced by the great Hugh Padgham. This put them in the Top 40 and the following, and final record, Synchronicty, would cement their worldwide legacy forever.

Another nostalgic one for me that my parents played all the time. I love cleaning my apartment to this record. It just works.

8.5/10 — A great album, a personal time capsule, and one of The Strokes’ defining records. Is This It captures a very specific point in time for me. Its sharp guitars, understated vocals, and effortless cool bring back vivid memories of where I was in my life when I first heard it. The album feels tied to that period in a way that makes it difficult to separate the music from the memories. That connection also makes my opinion of it shift. Sometimes it feels like a genuinely great album, full of tight songwriting and an unmistakable atmosphere. Other times, it feels more like a great album for me because of what it represents personally. And occasionally, it is simply a collection of songs that brings back fond memories of a particular moment in my life. Even with that uncertainty, the album’s influence and consistency are undeniable. From the title track and “Last Nite” to “Someday” and “Hard to Explain,” it has a distinctive sound that still feels immediate and memorable. An 8.5/10 — sometimes a great album, sometimes a personal favorite, and always a powerful reminder of a certain time in my life.

Early Buddy Guy, amazing sound to the person who would become Chicago blues ambassadors, loyal to its sound, loyal to its roots. A must listen for every Chicago style blues fan
