Big Thief · 2016
I love Big Thief, but in my opinion they are best at their rockiest, which is this album. Really a no-skip album.

Movies specifically is strangely simplistic, but is probably one of the most amazing listening experiences I’ve ever had. Her vocals are harmonies are always exactly what I want to hear.

The Saints · 1977
There’s something brilliantly confrontational about I’m Stranded, the debut album from Brisbane punk pioneers The Saints. Released in 1977, it arrived at a time when punk was still defining itself, yet The Saints already sounded like they had no interest in following anyone else’s rules. The album’s title track is the obvious centrepiece: a furious, three-chord blast of frustration and alienation, driven by Chris Bailey’s sneering vocals and Ed Kuepper’s jagged guitar. But the album is more than just a punk landmark. Beneath the noise and aggression is a surprising melodic instinct, with songs that are catchy without ever losing their sense of danger. What makes I’m Stranded particularly exciting is how raw it feels. The production doesn't polish away the band's rough edges; instead, it captures the urgency of a group playing as though everything depends on the next few minutes. The result is tense, energetic and genuinely rebellious rather than merely theatrical. Tracks such as “(I’m) Stranded,” “No Time,” and “One Way Street” showcase a band that could turn frustration into something immediate and infectious. There’s very little wasted motion: the songs hit hard, make their point and disappear before the energy has a chance to fade. Five decades later, I’m Stranded still sounds dangerous. Its influence on punk is undeniable, but listening to it now, it works best not as a historical artefact but as a great rock album in its own right. It is loud, petulant, impatient, melodic and gloriously uncompromising.

The Strokes · 2026
Is this a midlife crisis, or simply another product of Casablancas’ bizarre creativity? “Reality Awaits” departs from The Strokes’ signature sound, tipping more towards that of The Voidz, the more experimental band Casablancas cofounded.

Possibly the brightest melancholy ever written.

Inside · 1998
This is a collection of Inside seven inch records. This early record is a pure masterpiece from a band redefining a genre of music that would be celebrated a decade later as emo. The juxtaposition of the hard driving riffs and breakdowns to the delicate vocal deliveries is a triumph. If you want to explore and expand your emo pallet this is a path to get lost down.

Frank Zappa · 1969
Favorite Zappa Album. I remember it being one of those records on my parents shelf where the picture was kind of scary but also had to know more. Peaches En Regalia is just the best psychedelic weirdness.

Jane's Addiction · 1988
This is the first cassette I played when I got a new stereo installed in my first car in 1991. I drove to my uncle's house and said "You've gotta listen to this" and proceeded to play Up the Beach followed by the explosion of Ocean Size. Still remember the hair standing up on my arms at that moment. So many good songs on this album, Mountain Song is fierce.

This was the soundtrack to my first experience with sapphic yearning 😂 I love this album. It really feels like such an encapsulation of being a woman in your 20s. Lyrically and sonically I love what sza has done here.

The best album since Room on Fire. Interesting new sound - they sound nothing like The Strokes from the early 00s on this album..
