U2 · 2014
U2 sometimes gets caught up in remaining commercially relevant and the “biggest Rock band in the world.” This is evident here (even besides the Apple debacle). It has moments of what brilliance the band is capable of. However, it’s trying too hard to reach an irretrievable audience.

This Mortal Coil · 1984
Ivo Watts-Russell assembled a shifting cast of 4AD artists and transformed his favorite songs into something hauntingly beautiful and entirely his own. It’ll End in Tears never feels like a covers album or compilation—it feels like the work of one extraordinary, fully formed band.

Madonna · 2026
It’s Madonna focusing on what she’s good at: getting people to dance. No more trying to fool anyone into thinking she’s younger than she is. No hollow statement pieces. Just clever grooves and fun time lyrics providing much needed escapism.

Pink Floyd · 1975
I didn’t discover Pink Floyd when I was supposed to in high school—it took me another 20 years. But Wish You Were Here was worth the wait: haunting, immersive and, for me, worlds better than The Dark Side of the Moon.

IDLES · 2018
IDLES is an absolute favorite, and the title of this album pretty well captures one of the reasons why. There is humor and a palpable sense of levity in both the lyrics and music at different points, and Joe Talbot's heart on sleeve approach allows for equal parts vulnerability and, yes, resistance. "I'm Scum" epitomizes the "joy as an act of resistance" vibe and establishes itself as the song you already expect you will sing and scream along to in a communal music festival expereince at some point. It's fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously to be pessimistic or dour. It still manages to share a serious message and to energize. A gem in an already great catalog for IDLES.

My first Grateful Dead concert and still my favorite one! It was all great, but especially Eyes of the World. Their best in my opinion.
